Spring Hike to a Tiny Mountain

It seems like this year’s spring takes a while to really kick in. While in other years we were already in T-shirt and shorts mode, this spring I am still trying to figure out if I have to wear a sweater or a long sleeve shirt. We’ve also been getting a lot of rain, which is probably helpful for nature…but personally, I’m ready for some nice and warm weather.

Recently my family and I used the few hours we got without rain and walked to Ansaspitz, a tiny mountain in Sevelen, a town in the state of St. Gallen, Switzerland. This tiny mountain is super close to the farm where my mom grew up, and so even as little kids we would hike up there, enjoy the view and explore nature.

As I am writing this, I realized I always considered Ansaspitz more like a little hill as it is only 735 m.a.s.l. (2,400 feet above sea level). Currently my husband Josh and I are living in Zurich and I realized the most famous mountain in the state of Zurich is probably Uetliberg (which all the people here are very proud of) and it is only 100 meters (328ft) higher than Ansaspitz. :-D The view on Uetliberg is also very nice though, you can read more about the hike here.

Now back to Ansaspitz. The hike can be started in Sevelen, Zivilschutzanlage. From there it is a 40min hike of 6km (3.7 miles) and a 350m (1150ft) height difference. The hike is very easy and short, you can do it without any experience in hiking!

For the highlight of the hike we brought some horse meat (I know…i know… but it’s a Swiss delicacy!), homemade bread, chips and vegetables to the top and made a fire to grill the meat. We enjoyed super tasty sandwiches including the meat and a cocktail sauce. Those kind of sandwiches are our go to food to bring on a picnic if we know we have the chance to start a fire somewhere. They are just super yummy and nourishing.

I hope the instructions for this simple hike were inspiring to you and encourage you to check out your local trails! Let me know in the comments!
