Swiss Alps Hike – Mount Alvier
Three weeks ago we had an exceptionally nice and hot weeekend in Switzerland. We decided to show our friend from the US a little more of my home town after spending time at Äscher. I am always excited to show off my beautiful home and present some local highlights.
On Saturday we planned a hike to Alvier (7687 ft), a mountain in the Swiss Alps which can be seen from my parents house. Since temperatures were going to climb above 85° F (30°C) we decided to leave early in the morning and drive to Palfries and start the hike there. The hike is rated at a medium difficulty, but if you’re new, I would recommend having someone with hiking experience with you. The ascent takes about 1.5 hours with a steady incline and at times I was totally out of breath! On the way you’ll have to climb up a chimney, which is what we call a narrow, steep passage between rocks. This chimney isn’t too bad though since they put down a ladder/steps to get up. On the entire hike you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Lake Walensee and the surrounding mountains. On the peak there is a small hut, where you can enjoy a drink, hot meal or even sleep over night! We simply had a drink at the restaurant then ate our own lunch a bit further away on the peak and afterwards walked back down the same way as we came up.
Hiking used to be not my thing at all but the older I get the more I enjoy it! I love seeing the different flowers, being removed from everyday life, and getting that feeling of accomplishment when you reach the top! I hope I will get to climb more mountains this year!
