Freebie: Lettering Decoration Ideas
I heard a lot of you were having so much fun with part one of the hand lettering course, where you learn the basics, that I am excited to make part two today! This time I want to tackle banners, decorations and frames. Most of the time it is not quite enough to simply write a word in a beautiful font. Eventually you will want to spice things up a bit with some glamour. So I hope you’re ready to take out your pencil, eraser and paper and get started!
Banners
Banners are a nice and easy way of giving your words more of a fancy vibe. In the photo above you can see an example. There are different kinds of banners. Down below I give you a step-by-step instruction on straight and ribbon banners. I recommend starting out with the straight one, since that’s the easiest. The only thing you want to make sure when you draw them, is that the width of the banner stays the same. Everything else is pretty simple.
Decorations
Decorations are a really fun way of spicing up your lettering. The possibilities are endless here. You will notice that every artist has their favorites. If you are good at drawing, you can draw everything that supports your work. I am not so great at drawing so I stick to abstract art. Here are my 8 go to decorations, but as I said, the possibilities are endless.
In the picture down below you can see a romantic decoration. I tried to put together a little instructional drawing for you, so you can try it out as well.
Frames
Making frames can especially look good, when you make a whole lettering piece (almost like full on painting) Here are eight examples of frames. As you see some of them are actually banners, that work as a frame here or just a bunch of decorations put together so they create a frame.
Todays part asks a lot of creativity from you. You can test out my examples as practice. I hope, that you will find a lot more new and unique ideas to make your letterings look more beautiful.
