Camping Road Trip – Pisa to Rome

Here we go with part two of our amazing trip!

This was our route. It definitely looks pretty crazy (at least for me as a Swiss person) but if you split up the 22 hour drive over two weeks it actually isn’t bad at all! If you are interested in the first part of our trip, click here.

After Cinque Terre we drove to Pisa. We spent the day at the campsite to get some rest. The day after we took a bus to downtown Pisa. We went straight to the leaning tower and walked around it. We recommend walking around a bit so you see the tower from all sides, since it doesn’t lean as much on some of the sides. There are two other nice buildings next to it. On the way to the tower we spotted this tiny church which we really liked. Besides these things we didn’t quite find any other cool looking or nice places but it was still fun we went.

Campsite: We stayed in Marina di Pisa and the camping was called “Internationale”. It was right at the beach and offered a lot of shade. The beach is tiny there but it worked for us. The bathrooms aren’t the cleanest but the campsite has a little store where you can buy some necessities.

On day 10 of our trip we went to Florenz and we just fell in love with it! I didn’t really have any expectations going into it and I don’t think I’ve seen any pictures before. So that made the surprise even bigger. We loved the cathedral, the gallery, the Ponte Vecchio, Michelangelo’s David and all the other statues. And we loved how artsy the city was. There were lots of street artist painting their own art and selling it right there. We saw it all, from the Mona Lisa drawn with chalk on the ground to super detailed Tuscany paintings made with water color. Amazing!

The day after Florenz we directly went to Rome by train, which only took two hours. Rome was and is huge. If you get the chance to spend more than one day there we highly recommend staying for a while. Our first stop was the Vatican. My husband really wanted to see the Sistine Chapel and all of Michelangelos magic. And so we waited for quite a while until we got to enter the chapel and the museum. It is full of art and treasures of the past (and of tourists) and is to be recommended to art and culture lovers.

I for myself was a little under time pressure. There was so much more I wanted to see! At some point we finally made it out of the museum and we walked straight through the city to the Pantheon. In every corner you could see another beautiful building! After the Pantheon we walked to the Roman Forum. We happened to walk into the Vittorio Emanuele by accident, which is huge and very impressive. Our last destination was the Colosseum. We didn’t end up going into any of the places, but mostly out of time pressure. But all of the buildings are also just amazing to see from the outside. If you are planning on going to Rome, we suggest going on foot through the city as you discover many amazing places that you just won’t see with the metro.

What happens next, you’re asking? Well after those really full days we needed a little bit of rest back at the campsite in Pisa. We spent time reading, playing games, looking trough photos and cooling off in the sea. Here are some impressions on our camping life:

So this was an insight on our two week road trip. We loved it very much so. Looking back we would pretty much do everything the same. The only things we would change are probably more time in Rome and bringing a cooling box, because life without a fridge can be pretty challenging sometimes. The time was amazing and to be repeated.
