Explore Geneva and Lausanne – Highlights

Geneva, English Garden

A while ago Josh and I got to spend some time in Geneva and Lausanne, both cities in the western part of Switzerland. We were stoked to see Geneva, because neither of us have been there before. Since the city is located in the very south west of Switzerland and I grew up in the north east, it was always a little too far away. Actually now that I am looking up how long it would have taken us by train, I realize that it isn’t even that bad. But I guess 4 hours is a long time for Swiss standards…

Anywho, we stayed at an Airbnb in the city, but we wouldn’t recommend that place, since there was construction being done during our stay. It is nice to stay downtown though and being able to walk everywhere!

Geneva is definitely a great place if you love culture, museums, brands and good food. So here we are sharing our favorite places in Geneva: (you can find all the photos in the end of the post)

Places we recommend and loved:

At first I have to mention, that it was freaking cold on our days in Geneva even though it was only October. There was a really strong and cold wind combined with cold air. Even though I am not from there, I don’t think that is a common thing for that time of the year. But because of that we didn’t explore a lot of things right by the lake. The wind was too strong and too cold. Also because of these circumstances they turned off the big and famous fountain “Jet d’Eau”.

  • Jet d’Eau

  • Old town Geneva (everything around St. Pierre Cathedral), there are lots of cute uncommon shops and probably the best restaurants

    • St. Pierre Cathedral

    • Russian Church

    • Art Museum

    • Café du Bourg-de-four (restaurant with amazing hashbrowns!!! Highly recommend)

    • Place du Bourg-de-four

  • English garden

  • Shopping street (you will find all kinds of famous brands and also a lot of expensive boutiques)

  • United Nations building (not on the map but only a few tram stops away)

  • Broken Chair

  • Susuru (Great ramen place with super friendly staff)

Lausanne

After a few days in Geneva, we decided to move on and make a quick stop on the way home to look at Lausanne. I personally liked it more than Geneva, because it seemed to be a little more affordable. The city is built on a steep hill so we’d recommend using the metro to get around. Most of the time the hotels will give you a free public transport card.

We stayed at the “Hôtel des Voyageurs” and it was great. The room was clean and nice with a rain shower and a fridge. The hotel is located in the midst of all the shopping and restaurants and it still was quiet at night.

For Lausanne we just recommend walking around old town by Lausanne-Flon. There are lots of old, cute buildings, great views on the city, shops, restaurants and cafes.
