Papiliorama: A Butterfly Paradise in Switzerland
A house full of butterflies?!? No need to say more - I am in!
On a rare day off, Joshua and I finally had time to visit the Papiliorama - a butterfly zoo with over 1000 exotic butterflies in Kerzers, Switzerland. I was so excited and obviously had to bring my camera with a good lens for zooming so I could make some epic shots.
Upon arrival we found out they also have a Nocturama, a house where the day and night cycle is reversed which allows you to see nocturnal animals in action. This is a worldwide unique experience! For the first time I got to see sloths and also a lot of other special animals like porcupines, aardvarks and night monkeys. They also had a room - luckily closed off by glass windows - with a ton of bats, rats and bugs. Imagine having to clean that room! My nightmare!
After the Nocturama we walked over to the butterfly house. Immediately we were greeted by hot, muggy air, plants in full bloom and lots of butterflies. How beautiful! We watched and walked around the paths and were able to discover more and more different kinds of butterflies. My favorites were the monarch and the blue ones (couldn’t figure out the name). The best experience was to see two monarchs mate and I even got to shoot some photos of them! (Why does this sound so voyeuristic now?)
Aside from the two main attractions they also had a jungle room with lots of different animals including toucans and a petting zoo for the little visitors. I 100% recommend a visit - it can also be connected with some time in the city of Bern afterwards!
