Caumasee & Rhine Gorge – Swiss Hidden Gems
A little while ago Josh and I took my grandma to a beautiful place in the Swiss alps. We planned to do a hike along a stunning blue lake called Caumasee and then walk down to the Rhine canyon. The hike starts and ends at different places, so we decided to use public transport for it. From Zurich we went to Flims Waldhaus, Caumasee. This train ride took us about 2h. From there it is only 5 minutes until you can see the lake from above. They have something like a gondola that takes you down to the water. If you prefer to walk, which is what we did, you leave the main street before you see the lake. (side note: Yes, I edited the photos, but the lake really has this stunning blue color and the glitter!)
Down by the water we walked along the shore and then went on through the forest until we started to see the Rhine canyon from above. There are several look outs and one big platform where you can enjoy an amazing view on the beginning of one of the most important rivers of Europe.
After the platform you’ll keep going through the forest for a while until you start to descend down the canyon. The whole hike is very easy, so don’t worry about your hiking skills! Down in the canyon you’ll walk along the Rhine to the train station Versam-Safien. This train will take you to Chur and then back to Zurich.
Hiking level: easy
Duration: If you want to really take it slow, enjoy some time at the lake then you will be on the way for about 3 hours.
