Retro Sign 2.0 — The Susslife

This is probably one of my favorite retro signs I’ve made so far, as it was almost “foreshadowing” our summer trip. I made the artwork a while back coming across this quote inspired me to connect it to our travel plans, which I knew would involve a lot of driving. What I didn’t know was that we were going to see those exact cacti! I mean - it is simply a classic cactus to draw but we actually got to see them in Saguaro National Park.

I am proud of how the car turned out. Shading and lights are still a big challenge for me and I feel like it turned out quite well on the car. I also love how the orange/yellow and blue on the retro sign pops and makes it glow!

On my last blogpost about retro signs you can see lots of tips on how to make such a sign on the iPad. Further down this post I’ll be sharing a lot of pictures of how the artwork looked throughout the process. I often try out lots of different colors and lights until I am happy about the looks, (you can see this in the time lapse) so I encourage you to do the same. The great part about art on the iPad is that you get so many chances of trying things out! Don’t hesitate to spend a lot of time on your artwork, don’t rush it! It took me 5 hours to finish this one!

Dieses Retroschild, welches ich schon vor einer Weile gemalt habe, ist eines meiner Lieblingsschilder bis jetzt, da es fast unsere Sommerferien prophezeite. Ich sah das Zitat und war inspiriert, es mit unseren Ferienplänen zu verbinden. Dort wusste ich zwar noch nicht genau, wo die Reise hinführen würde, aber uns war klar, dass es mit vielen Autofahrten verbunden sein würde. Was ich nicht wusste, war, dass wir genau diese Kakteen sehen würden! Natürlich ist es ein klassischer Kaktus zum Zeichnen, aber wir sahen die echten, bis 6m hohen Kakteen im Saguaro Nationalpark.

Ich bin stolz darauf wie das gezeichnete Auto herauskam. Schattieren und Lichtpunkte sind immer noch grosse Herausforderungen beim Zeichnen für mich und ich finde, dass es mir beim Auto gut gelungen ist. Auch das Gelb-Orange sticht so richtig gut vom dunkelblauen Hintergrund hervor und bringt das Schild zum Leuchten.

Bei meinem letzten Blogpost zu Retroschildern erkläre ich genauer, wie man auf dem iPad so etwas zeichnen kann. Bei den Bildern unten könnt ihr die einzelnen Arbeitsschritte für dieses Bild genauer erkennen. Wann immer ich zeichne probiere ich viele Farben aus, bis ich endlich zufrieden bin. (wie ihr auch im Zeitraffervideo sehen könnt) Ich empfehle euch das sehr! Das tolle am Zeichnen auf dem iPad sind die vielen Chancen, die man bekommt um etwas auszutesten. Nehmt euch Zeit beim Malen - es ist kein Wettrennen. Für diese Zeichnung brauchte ich 5 Stunden!
