Step-by-Step Wood Sign DIY
Recently I have been making a lot of custom made hand lettering signs which were used for weddings or simply as a nice decor piece for indoors. I have developed some techniques that turned out to be really helpful which I will be sharing with you:
Write and draw a sketch of your lettering piece on an iPad or paper. I am sharing some tips on hand lettering in this post.
Cut a wooden board into the right sizes. We simply used some old boards from my dads company. (The smoother the surface the better) Then paint the board with black waterproof paint or a wood stain of your choice. Paint over the stain with a lacker to prevent the color from coming off when writing on it.
Now draw the words and art on the black board using a sharpened piece of chalk. (You can sharpen them with a pencil sharpener.) Like this you can erase and redraw as many times as you want. I like to place the sign 2m (6ft) in front of me to see if everything is suitably spaced and even.
Then write over it with a waterproof white pen. (I’ve tested a lot of pens and am a fan of Posca Pens. They last a long time, are opaque and waterproof) Once everything is written in pen, you can simply wipe over it with a wet rag, erase all the chalk and your artwork is ready to be displayed!
